Digital Audio Cable Guide

Many people are very interested in getting the best digital audio experience from their devices and this means going through and looking for the best options available to get their sound to come out clean, crisp and with near perfect playback from the original data source. Depending on many different variables, you may or may not be able to get the sound to playback exactly as you want it to unless you choose the best option for your individual needs. There are two main options that you can really look into for very high quality digital audio and those are coaxial digital cables and optical digital cables. There are many other options available as well but they are not really designed to work with many different options and are generally hardware specific.

Coaxial Digital Cables

Coaxial digital cables are very common and very sturdy types of cables that can be used for high end digital audio that is both lower cost and can be a very nice choice for someone that has a device which can use coaxial digital cables to transmit high quality sound information. This is most often seen with DVD, Bluray and various other video equipment and Video Game consoles that have these special sound options for a very high quality sound information transmission option. Plenty of these coaxial digital cable using devices will be able to use the nice and near perfect sound quality of the cables as long as there is no electrical interference and everything is set up to work correctly. Usually, high end televisions or home theatre systems are required to be able to use coaxial digital cables for great sounding output otherwise you will not be able to take full advantage of what these cable shave to offer.

How coaxial digital cables actually work is by transmitting the data as electrical signals of data pieces that can be decoded by the appropriate hardware to process the sound. This is done by high quality copper wire encased in aluminum shielding and also has a thick coating of wire casing. This allows the high quality noise output to be received by the hardware very fast and the sound can be produced by the device with relatively little interference and will allow for high quality sound to be heard once processed. Make sure that you have everything connected the right way or the sound output may not be anything like it should be when working at optimum levels of sound processing. Of course everything is color coded and you will not have too much difficulty deciding what needs to be done to have everything connected in the right spot to hear all of the great sound processed by the device that you are using with the high quality coaxial digital cables.

The advent of optical digital cables is what takes the coaxial digital cable by a large leap in technological power by using the ability to have near lossless transmission of data by using light pulses instead of transmitting electrical signals through a wire such as coaxial digital cables and other types of cable interfaces. This allows for the highest quality of sound information to be transmitted through longer distances than normally could be done by coaxial and various other types of wired sound options. You will want to really look into what optical digital cables can do for your sound needs. It is not uncommon to find optical digital cables in use with several different high quality output devices in conjunction with different sound processing hardware that will output the most perfect sound that is possible through these high power wired options. There are fewer limitations with optical digital sound cables as they can carry light much better than some types of cables will carry electricity within them.

The limitations of optical digital cables are very difficult to really get into but you will have to make sure that you use the best quality cables that you can find for your device. Of course you will not need studio quality optical digital cables if you do not need them, but the higher quality that the fiber optic cables are that are used with the devices, the better quality your sound will be. The major limiting factor of using optical digital cables is that they will lose quality and possibly not function well at all if you need to have cables that are too long and wavy or if you must bend cables to get them where they need to be. Even though fiber optical cables can transfer light nearly perfectly in any direction, when transmitting high end audio information through red light, the quality will tend to diminish if the distance is too long or if there are too many bends in the cable that make the light lose its impact once it reaches the other end of the cable.

HDMI options are usually confused with sound carrying cables as they can include some high quality sound transmission properties but they are mainly designed to carry higher resolution image data for video options that are usually needed with large televisions that support the format. This means that even though it may transmit sound, it will not be anything close to what you will be able to get with coaxial digital cables and other options such as optical digital cables!

When choosing between high end digital audio cables, you need to know what you need the most out of your sound system. If you will need to transmit sound over a relatively large area, then optical digital cables are your best resource as most coaxial digital cables cut off at 6 feet in length because they will not transmit the highest quality sound information in longer lengths because the electrical impulses are weakened as the length increases. Of course if you need the wires to be able to snake around and be in a relatively non direct length, then you will need to look into your coaxial digital cable options instead because the optical digital cables will not be as useful in that situation.

Of course many people will not even be able to distinguish the difference between both coaxial and optical digital cable options, only those who have a really fine tuned ear and those who know how to knit-pick certain quality differences will be able to really tell which is better for you. So the best thing to do in this case is to purchase an option that you need for your unique situation. Of course if you cannot afford optical digital audio cables because they are nearly twice the cost of a coaxial digital cable of the same length, then it may be simply a matter of selecting something that is cost effective for what you want to be able to hear. Make sure that you look into getting what is affordable and will last you a long time in the situation that your configuration needs to be in. Most normal listeners of music and various other options such as movies and more will not be able to distinguish the quality difference between either option for digital audio cables.

How to tell a good digital audio cable option from a bad digital audio cable option is usually something that everyone wants to know so that they can choose an appropriate option for their situation. Of course with coaxial digital cables, a good selection will be something that does not exceed 6 feet as well as having the best materials used in the actual cable. Gold tips are often a good choice because gold is an excellent conductor and thus will be able to produce better quality audio providing that the copper that is used in the coaxial digital cable option is of high quality as well. To find a good optical digital cable, you will want to find the higher quality fiber optic materials used in high quality optical digital cables to get the very best quality available to you. Make sure that you look into all of your available options and see what you devices are capable of before looking into buying something so great for a device that is not supported.
